2nd Annual World Breastfeeding Week Book Release Challenge August 1-31, 2007

2nd Annual World Breastfeeding Week
Book Release Challenge

August 1-31, 2007

World Breastfeeding Week is officially the first week in August but My Baby and More we will be celebrating all month!

We are honored to be hosting the 2nd Annual World Breastfeeding Week Book Release Challenge from August 1-31, 2007. Last year more than 150 books were “released into the wild” from all over the world; including the USA, Holland, Portugal and more. This year our goal is to more than double that number.

All releases must be about breastfeeding, such as breastfeeding ‘how to’ books (i.e. “The Nursing Mother’s Companion”) or breastfeeding advocacy books (i.e. “Milk, Money and Madness”.)

Books can also be children’s books that show pictures of breastfeeding or depict breastfeeding as a normal part of family life (i.e. “Near Mama’s Heart” or “Mama, Mama”.)

Books should be released in places where pregnant or new mothers are likely to catch them, such as childbirth classes, baby-type stores, WIC offices, OB offices, etc.

We would also like to add a category for fiction books that discuss breastfeeding as some part of the plot line. For example, “The Red Tent” has breastfeeding characters, as well as the book “When We Were Grownups”. Please write a short description in your journal entry of how breastfeeding is depicted in the book.

For ideas of children’s books with breastfeeding as a theme you can see some titles here:

For ideas of books that would help a new mom get started breastfeeding, you can check out this list of books:

Sign up for the challenge by commenting to this post and by posting your releases at BookCrossing.com. Please write “World Breastfeeding Week Challenge” in your journal entry. You may release as many books as you want. The releases can be WILD or OBCZ. A controlled release will count as long as it is logical … for example, releasing the book, “The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding” to a pregnant mom, or releasing the book, “Will There Be a Lap for Me?” to a child expecting a baby brother or sister.

Spread the word!

To promote this exciting project you are free to use the World Breastfeeding Week Book Release Challenge Logo. Just right click on the image found there. Please save the logo to your own computer and link it to the release challenge on bookcrossing.com.

Thanks for organizing the Bookcrossing challenge this year. I’m looking forward to releasing some of the books I’ve been collecting since last year’s challenge. Hope lots of moms from all over the world participate again!

Sounds great! I’ll play along, and will post about it, too.

One question: Do participants have to be Book Crossing members?

This is so cool. I will look on my shelves for some books to give away. We have a local WIC that could probably use some. Thanks for doing this.

[...] Looking for a fun way to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week August 1 through 7, 2007, without having to plan or attend an event? Play along with My Baby and More for the 2nd Annual World Breastfeeding Week Book Release Challenge for the whole month of August! I’d heard of “releasing” books before — registering a book you’ve enjoyed at BookCrossing.com, labeling the book and then leaving it in a conspicuous place for another reader to discover. The hope is that the new reader will also enjoy the book enough to leave a journal entry at the BookCrossing registration and “release” the book again for another reader to find! [...]

This is such a wonderful opportunity and idea. I have been going thru my book shelves and buying books for this challenge. As an FYI, ibreastfeeding.com has a special on book packages. I bought a few just for the challenge…. Doctor’s offices have really been receptive. I am looking forward to finding out the results of the challenge.- Best Wishes, Renee

  12. Elizabeth Says:

I have released over 30 books in the past 2 weeks for WBC through bookcrossings…. what a great idea! My La Leche League group has been trying to decide what to do with our “older” book editions and this was the perfect opportunity to put them out in to the community. Thanks!
